Zulu Hoops captures the surprising drama that unfolds when an over-achieving American science teacher decides to spend a year at an impoverished school in rural South Africa. Frustrated by the many barriers that dog him in the classroom, he eventually vows to get through to his students using his favorite sport: basketball. Before long, he has miraculously succeeded in building the first modern basketball court in the entire region. But can he teach his students to play a sport they have never seen before and coach them to victory in a few short months? Can success on the court translate into success in life? Zulu Hoops is a film about the challenges facing Westerners working in Africa, and the lives of young people who survive on 50 cents a day and dream of one day playing in the NBA.
Support the film! We have completed the primary production phase of the film, but we are now raising funds for post-production (editing and preparation of the film for festival distribution and broadcast). We are also planning an additional shoot on location at Nsalamanga High School and at the next Durban basketball tournament. Zulu Hoops is an important story about the struggles facing rural Africa, and about the ability of sports to build cultural bridges and empower young people. We need your help to finish Zulu Hoops and bring its valuable message to audiences.
